2018 Mac Forbes "RS8" Riesling, Strathbogie Ranges, Victoria, Australia

Mac Forbes, a native of the nearby Yarra Valley, farms this hillside parcel above the town of Caveat, about 2.5 hours northeast of Melbourne. The soil typography is given almost entirely to decomposing granite, an unforgiving composition but one well suited to Riesling vines, which need stress to better produce concentrated fruit. "RS8" refers to the wine's residual sugar (8g/l), which in this case adds rounder primary aromatics and softens what would otherwise be a shrill wine, given its high total acidity. A fine example of how good Australian Riesling can be.
