2018 Vocal "Sabroso" Cabernet Pfeffer, Lime Kiln Valley, CA

Not to be confused with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Pfeffer is a red variety from unknown Bordeaux parentage, possibly named for the 19th century San Jose nurseryman William Pfeffer, and the Enz Vineyard (planted in the 1890's) is the mother block for it in the state. 100% whole cluster fermented in concrete, with 5 days of carbonic maceration, the resulting wine is fresh and lively, with pronounced dark fruit notes and subtle texture. A wine of pleasure, and also fun to discuss.
